SOLIDWORKS 2018Have you read the interview of SOLIDWORKS CEO Gian Paolo Bassi with Engineering.com? In the article, SOLIDWORKS 2018: Gian Paolo Bassi’s New Deal to Get Users onto the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, he talks about new strategies and how the company is positioning its SOLIDWORKS 3DEXPERIENCE products with users.

We’re eager to hear his announcements next month at SOLIDWORKS World 2018 in LA about the lineup of products on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for SOLIDWORKS users. He describes how SOLIDWORKS will reveal the “Power By” strategy that he calls the connection of the desktop/file-based world to the services offered by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

SOLIDWORKS 3DEXPERIENCE in 2018

Bassi described the new release of 3DEXPERIENCE 2018x, which is the major platform for the company’s cloud and PLM solutions. They are offering all desktop customers with active subscriptions free access to the My3DEXPERIENCE offer which includes a variety of services including its 3DPlay (a universal view and markup tool) and Marketplace (for the contract manufacturing of 3D printing jobs with qualified providers).

SOLIDWORKS desktop users will also have the option to buy 3DEXPERIENCE platform-based advanced services such as non-linear simulation (Abaqus-based “Simulation Engineer”) and zero-infrastructure, cloud-based data management called SOLIDWORKS 3DEXPERIENCE Standard, Professional and Enterprise. That is based on the ENOVIA back end, and features a scalable set of solutions from PDM to full PLM.

The Evolving Nature of Technology Solutions

Bassi described how product development has changed over the years, with the most productive solutions beating the odds. He sees the 3DX/V6 data-driven platform as just such a solution.

“This is actually the big added value of ENOVIA solutions on the 3DX platform: they bring file-based CAD as a first class citizen of the platform, and not only SOLIDWORKS’ product structure but also CATIA V5 and even competing CAD systems. This makes it possible, for instance, to do design mock up in a hybrid environment, with products coming from different file-based CADs and the native 3DX data-driven product structure. Similarly, this allows users to manage a universal BOM with a consistent and unified data model.”

Bassi claims that the debate over data-driven vs. file-based is overrated and that SOLIDWORKS users would eventually need to adhere to this model if they want to take advantage of IOT, development of smart products, and distributed engineering and manufacturing options, which currently only 3DEXPERIECE provides.

As true experts in the 3DEXPERIENCE/V6, ENOVIA technology and SOLIDWORKS PDM, xLM Solutions provides specialized services and solutions to enhance and integrate these products with other enterprise technologies. Check out our data migration solutions and products.
