There is nothing like an in-person conference after we’ve been away for two years. COE 2022 gave us the opportunity to catch up with old friends, colleagues, and customers and to meet new friends – all face-to-face. And once again, NOLA was an amazing host city – the good times roll all the time.

Mark your calendars – COE 2023 will be in Miami, April 16-19, 2023.

COE 2022, as always, is an important networking event with valuable presentations, interesting sessions, and awesome keynotes from industry leaders. We attended as many sessions as we could and had a terrific time meeting up with 3DEXPERIENCE experts and customers.

As we described in our previous blog, we presented three sessions at COE 2022:

  • Migrating Data to 3DEXPERIENCE
  • Best Practices and Lessons Learned for Implementing 3DEXPERIENCE with a Collaborative Team While Migrating from a Legacy System to 3DEXPERIENCE, which we presented with one of our customers
  • Project Management in 3DEXPERIENCE

Watch for webinar announcements in the coming months where we’ll share more on these three topics. Contact us if you’d like to discuss these topics in depth.

COE 2022 Presentations

Some of the main themes and presentations that caught my attention are:

  • Model Based System Engineering (MBSE)
  • Modeling and Simulation (Mod-Sim)
  • Current Design Trends
  • New 3DEXPERIENCE Roles
  • Thoughts from the Electric Car Presentations

Model-Based Systems Engineering

We know that model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a hot topic in the engineering industry. In 2018, Dassault Systèmes acquired No Magic, the leader in model-based systems engineering and modeling solutions for software architecture and business processes. It has since integrated the No Magic solutions into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform under the brand of CATIA Magic – Dassault Systèmes is putting a significant focus on its CATIA Magic solutions.

One of the key aspects of model-based systems engineering is the “V” model or framework. In this case, the axes of the V model on the downward left side (\) include requirements, systems, and functions. The upward (/) right hand side of the V include physical design, testing, validation and deployment. This framework is used heavily through systems engineering. It is a waterfall model for managing lifecycle data, which can take time before a final product is produced. DS is using its CATIA Magic solutions to conduct systems engineering with the V model but in a more agile framework.

Here at xLM Solutions we’ll be watching for more details from DS as the products evolve. If you’d like to learn more about MBSE, please contact us and watch for future articles. You can also find more information about MBSE from the International Council on Systems Engineering INCOSE.org.

Modeling and Simulation (Mod-Sim)

Mod-Sim, or modelling and simulation, is the ability to bridge the modelling/design works with the simulation world. One of the key aspects of Mod-Sim is to embed simulation right into the modeling environment. This allows quick integrations between designs with a seamless integration between the two disciplines resulting in faster design processes and better engineered products.

Design Trends

We observed several new design trends at COE 2022, including:

  • Sustainability through design that includes to recycling. DS is creating new roles to help improve on sustainability, such as being able to better manage material as a product is built through tear-down and recycling. Dassault is offering two new roles in this effort: Sustainable Innovation Analyst and Sustainable Innovation Manager.
  • Cognitive Automated Design and artificial intelligence added to generative automated design to assist in generating the best parts / shapes, etc. The effort is to intelligently determine how to best design parts, such as running different simulations with different parameters until the best design or various designs with trade off can be presented.
By adding AI Drive, the question could come up, could AI replace the engineer or designer? And the message was no, as there will always be a critical need for the human touch to create the final product. AI can be an efficient addition to generative design on thin parts, such as sheet metal, and to identify generative tolerances to automatically add them to 3D models.
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality processes that allow the user to be immersed in the product virtually.

New 3DEXPERIENCE Roles

At COE 2022, DS presented new 3DEXPERIENCE roles of:

  • Create Design Experience – gives users the ability to easily start with sketches and do more design and creative work to help bridge the gap to more Class A heaving or functional design
  • Sustainable Innovator Manager – provides the ability to enforce sustainable goals in the design phases and offers weight and environmental analytics for decision making
  • Digital Mockup Validation Managers – allows the ability to create design reviews and mockups all on the web. DS will soon add the ability to see simulation results
  • Risk Manager – gives users the ability to create risks and work on risks, including dashboards of risk heat map, risk breakdown, risk classification and risk action plan. These roles extend the risk functionality in the DPM Project management role.
  • Supplier Network Manager – allows sourcing mangers to create and manage supplier and other key information

Presenters also mentioned that a new role is coming to set up automated rules and low code configurations within the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. In addition, users will be able to view office documents in 3DEXPERIENCE 2022 on the DS Public Cloud.

Final Thoughts from the Electric Car Presentations

We enjoyed the presentations from the electric car manufacturers Rivian Automotive, Inc. and Lucid Motors, Inc. It’s fascinating to see their vehicles and specs and to understand how they are using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. And while these are very large implementations, here at xLM Solutions we are completing the same kinds of tasks and resolving the same types of issues, whether related to on-premise vs. cloud implementations, integrating 3DX with other downstream applications or conducting migrations of legacy data. We are doing exactly the same kind of work. Just ask us.
