xLM Solutions hosted a 3DEXPERIENCE Roundtable to discuss features and field questions about the platform, the Cloud, implementation and migration. We had an excellent turnout and insightful responses. Our attendees suggested that we schedule these 3DEXPERIENCE roundtable events every quarter. Watch your emails for invitations or contact us directly.

At last week’s roundtable, over 30 customers and implementers shared their thoughts and questions about 3DEXPERIENCE. It was an interesting discussion and good to hear multiple perspectives.

Here are some of the key topics we discussed.

Cloud

We’re hearing some confusion about what we mean when we talk about “Cloud’ and whether it refers to the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Public Cloud, Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Private Cloud or a company’s own hosted Cloud environment. When we mention cloud in conjunction with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, we’re generally talking about the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Public Cloud.

With the Dassault Systèmes Public Cloud, DS maintains the infrastructure, including servers, and conducts backups and upgrades. It’s important to note that DS controls when the system will be upgraded, and the customizations/configurations users can apply. With an on-premise or company-hosted 3DEXPERIENCE environment, users do not have these limits. For ITAR customers, DS Public cloud is not an option because of data access issues.

xLM Solutions can help analyze requirements and find the best fit for Cloud vs. on-premise implementations. We recommend a detailed assessment and requirement validation to confirm that the chosen solution meets the end customer’s needs.

During the Roundtable discussions, we talked about taking a two-step process to migrate to the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Public Cloud. For customers wanting to migrate full history and move to the cloud, Dassault Systèmes proposes a stepped process to first migrate to an on-premise environment and then migrate the on-premise data to the cloud through the DS services group.

Note that we believe that DS is going to launch a new migration tool in 2023x giving users the ability to migrate directly to the public cloud, but we only have limited information at the moment. Stay tuned.

Migration

Attendees had a great deal to say about migration, including migration to UPS/Power’By. We heard from attendees that many are still managing CAD data with the Designer Central data model. We’ve written a detailed blog about data migration from Designer Central to the Unified Product Structure data model.

We also discussed geometric validation and its use in data migration and solution upgrades. Geometric validation relates to validating the CAD models to make sure they contain the same dimensions and tolerances, etc., before and after the migration/upgrade. Contact us to discuss this topic in more detail.

xLM Solutions has developed tools and methodologies to conduct complicated data migrations. Throughout our careers, we have completed dozens of complex data migration projects with our custom methods. We thoroughly test and validate data until we know that the production migration is successful. Contact us directly for more details.

Infrastructure and Performance Tuning

The attendees discussed the topic of infrastructure and performance tuning. We recommend that users have a continuous process for infrastructure and performance tuning. As user loads and volumes change, it’s important to monitor it quarterly and conduct an extensive annual review.

Other Roundtable Questions/Comments

The roundtable attendees shared thoughts and questions about:

  • Customizations moving from Triggers and Java to Web services and EKL.
  • How long a phased implementation should take – depending on the size and requirements, it could be a few months to a year, especially when it includes a data migration.
  • We know of some customers running 3DEXPERIENCE on a hosted AWS Linux environment. For more details, we suggest users contact Dassault Systèmes support.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE does support the management of different CATIA V5 releases. xLM Solutions can assist users with various methodologies to support different release levels.

Future Roundtable Topics

In our future 3DEXPERIENCE Roundtable events, we’ll look into:

  • Customer challenges and experiences with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform
  • Feature comparisons between Cloud and on-premise
  • Data migration
  • Best Practices for setting up and/or customizing dashboards
  • Digital Twin
  • Future state of the QUM – Quality and RFQ – supplier roles/apps

Contact us for more information. We look forward to seeing you at our next 3DEXPERIENCE Roundtable.
