Over the years, I’ve helped organizations of every size adopt, optimize, and rescue 3DEXPERIENCE implementations. And whether a company is evaluating the platform for the first time or trying to understand why their current deployment isn’t delivering the expected value, the pattern is always the same:

Success or failure is determined by the fundamentals.

Not by a feature. Not by a module. By the foundational decisions you make before the system becomes part of your daily operations.

That’s why I hosted our recent Fundamentals of 3DEXPERIENCE webinar — not to walk through buttons, but to give leaders the clarity they need to use the platform strategically instead of reactively.

Here are a few insights I believe every decision-maker should understand.

  1. 3DEXPERIENCE is only as strong as the structure behind it

Your collaborative spaces, your roles, your organizations, your dashboards — these aren’t technical constructs. They are a direct reflection of how your business works.

When those elements are misaligned, you’ll see symptoms immediately:

  • Engineers storing data in the wrong place
  • Confusion about ownership and permissions
  • Slow approvals, bottlenecked changes, or bypassed governance
  • Difficulty finding or trusting data
  • Integrations that fail because the underlying model doesn’t support them

Most companies don’t have a “user adoption problem.” They have a structural alignment problem.

  1. Underutilized 3DEXPERIENCE is not a user issue — it’s an implementation issue

When leaders tell me, “We’re only using 20% of the platform,” they assume the team hasn’t learned enough yet. In reality, the opposite is usually true.

If the foundation wasn’t set up with the business in mind — the right metadata, revisioning approach, security model, or CAD integration behaviors — then it becomes impossible to expand without backtracking or rework.

In the webinar, I walked through the areas where I see this most often:

  • Change processes that either over-govern or under-govern
  • CAD, ERP and other integrations that are not configured properly creating duplication of data
  • Metadata models that limit automation, downstream use and proper use of search
  • Permissions that don’t reflect IP sensitivity or supplier involvement, making sure the right people have the correct access to their specific data
  • Efficient and automated processes
  • Poor or improperly planned data migrations, hence having usable data in the system

Getting these right early on determines how quickly you can scale later.

  1. Change management is not optional — it is the backbone of PLM maturity

One of the most underestimated pieces of 3DEXPERIENCE is change governance.

A company may start with something simple like Change Actions, then slowly realize they need Change Requests, impact analysis, or more formalized and automated approvals.

  1. Integration and AI are only valuable if your data foundation is clean

Many companies are looking ahead to ERP integration, automation, analytics, or emerging AI capabilities. But here’s the truth few leaders hear early enough:

AI and integration amplify whatever foundation you give them. If the data model is inconsistent, the downstream impact is multiplied.

Your part numbering strategy, metadata, revisioning, lifecycle definitions, and CAD hygiene all determine how far you can go.

The fundamentals you set today dictate your readiness for everything you want to do tomorrow.

  1. You don’t have to navigate this alone

xLM Solutions doesn’t sell software — we help companies get 3DEXPERIENCE right.

That includes:

  • Diagnostic reviews of existing deployments
  • Guidance on security, data organization, collab spaces, and governance
  • CAD integration strategy
  • Clean data models with the proper metadata
  • Change management design
  • Cloud and on-prem implementation support
  • Customizations to help automated unique company processes
  • Integrations to enterprise systems like ERP
  • Ongoing advisory, support and training

If you’re evaluating 3DEXPERIENCE, we can help you define a structure that scales. If you’re already live, we can help you pinpoint where value is being lost — and fix it before it becomes a long-term limitation.

If these themes resonate, I encourage you to watch the Fundamentals of 3DEXPERIENCE on-demand recording. It’s a practical, strategic look at the platform from someone who has lived through dozens of implementations, migrations, and rescues. I also encourage you to get in touch with our team to discuss your current deployment or future roadmap

The fundamentals aren’t the “basics.” They’re the decisions that determine everything that comes next.
